Tropical Forest Alliance

We cannot reach our global climate, nature, food security and development goals without protecting and restoring our natural ecosystems, particularly tropical forests.

Agricultural commodity production is one of the biggest drivers of nature loss around the world, and land use causes almost a quarter of global emissions. But new production models are emerging, and we need an agricultural transition on an equal scale to the energy transition.

A transformation on such a global scale requires collaboration and action from a wide range of stakeholders including public, private and civil society organizations. The Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) is a multi-stakeholder partnership catalyzing collective action to drive the transition to global deforestation- and conversion-free (DCF) agricultural commodities.

Forests are home to over 80% of the world's land-based species of animals, plants and insects and more than 1 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods.

TFA’s primary focus is on the value chains of large cattle, palm oil and soy-related companies.

These are the commodities which have the greatest impact on conversion of critical ecosystems and the associated greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss and social disruption.

However, these actors cannot drive change alone. That’s why TFA works with a wide spectrum of stakeholders including corporates, policy makers, financial institutions and civil society organizations to accelerate progress in decoupling agricultural production from deforestation and ecosystem conversion.

TFA is an alliance where an active and engaged community is critical to success.

Where we work

TFA’s work is designed to have impact on a global scale, working with corporates, finance institutions and public policy makers, with a significant focus on support for policy and financial solutions in forest frontier markets including Brazil and Indonesia. In key demand side markets including China – as well as the EU, the UK and US – we collaborate to drive collective action across the value chain.

By working with global and regional companies, TFA also helps to catalyze collective action in other regions that produce and process forest-related commodities, such as Latin America and Africa.

As a multistakeholder platform, the TFA actively participates with around 190 participants and collaborators from the public and private sectors, including finance, and civil society sectors.

We work collectively to accelerate progress in decoupling agricultural production from deforestation and ecosystem conversion.
